How to approach a subject you genuinely hate

With a change in grade and the freedom to choose subjects, students naturally gravitate towards their favourite ones. But those additional, compulsory subjects matter to our education just as much. So rather than avoiding them, why not make them a little more interesting to cover — and perhaps even enjoy?

Find your interest point. Look for an aspect of the subject that genuinely catches your attention, even if it is small. Try to understand how it can aid your long-term goals — whether financially or in terms of personality development. Once you keep that purpose in mind, connect the subject to real life. Relevance sparks interest.

Key points:

  • Find an aspect of the subject that interests you.
  • Connect it to your goals and real-life applications.
  • Study in small, manageable chunks.
  • Change your environment and learning methods.
  • Seek help from teachers, classmates, or tutors when needed.
  • Stay patient and maintain a positive mindset

Create a timetable. Break your study pattern and adjust it into small, manageable chunks rather than tackling it all at once. Small, consistent wins build momentum towards the larger goal without feeling overwhelming.

Change your environment and routine. Something as simple as pairing a dull study session with your favourite drink or sitting somewhere different can shift your mood entirely. Also experiment with your learning style — online resources, offline reading, video tutorials, or theoretical notes — until you find what clicks for you.

Ask for help. If you find the subject difficult to understand, reach out to a teacher, classmate, or tutor. There is no shame in it. Slowly and gradually, the subject will grow on you, and you will begin to appreciate its importance at your own pace.

Approach every subject with a positive mindset. It not only helps academically but also builds lifelong skills and values. It is absolutely worth trying.
